Why doesn’t the timing light work when attached to the encoder and the 6300 is on?
The encoder must be attached to the 6300 and the 6300 must be on. In addition, the 6300 must be in the data collection menu (i.e. collection point selection or the graphic screen) in order for the encoder power to be on. This is a power saving feature to conserve battery life.
You may for example, wish to leave the power on at all times to the encoder when taking four cycle data in order to preserve the phase setting in the encoder. This is the logic which keeps track of the power or exhaust cycle. Power to the encoder can be left on at all times by setting the power save option to "NO" in the hardware configuration menu option.
My 6300 doesn't turn on when pressing the ON/OFF key.
Remove the battery and remove the ac adapter from the 6300, press the ON/OFF key 2-3 times for approximately 2 seconds each time. This will reset the keypad processor. Place the battery and/or ac adapter back in and turn on the unit.
When taking data on a 4-cycle engine the data seems to shift 360 degrees. Changing the A/B switch on the encoder fixes it, but it changes again without touching the A/B switch.
The 6300 has a power save option. If the option (located in the root menu under hardware options) is set to yes, then the 6300 will turn off the encoder each time you return from one function or another to the menu. When you enter into a new function the encoder power is turned on again, it may flip between power and exhaust stroke. To eliminate this problem go to the hardware options in the 6300 root menu and change the line "Use power save" from yes to no. You may notice a slight reduction in battery life when set to no.
